چکیده

A distinctly temperature-dependent Nernst coefficient, ν, which is strongly enhanced over that of LaCu(2)Si(2), is observed between T=2 and 300 K for CeCu(2)Si(2) and Ce(0.8)La(0.2)Cu(2)Si(2). The enhanced ν(T) is determined by the asymmetry of the on-site Kondo (conduction electron -4f electron) scattering rate. Taking into account the measured Hall mobility, μ(H), the highly unusual thermopower, S, of these systems can be semiquantitatively described by S(T)=-ν(T)/μ(H)(T), which explicitly demonstrates that the thermopower originates from the local Kondo scattering process over a wide temperature range from far above to well below the coherence temperature (≈20 K for CeCu(2)Si(2)). Our results suggest that the Nernst effect can act as a proper probe of local charge-carrier scattering. This promises to impact on exploring the unconventional enhancement of the thermopower in correlated materials suited for potential applications.

Pseudogap Effects in Heavy Fermions Close to a Quantum Phase Transition

Neutron-scattering experiments on heavy fermions close to a magnetic quantum critical point are suggestive of an anomalous local dynamical spin susceptibility. The possibility that this anomaly arises due to a single-particle pseudogap is explored through a study of the Kondo model with a power-law density of states, a problem which exhibits a zero-temperature phase transition at a finite Kondo...

Mean Field Description of Kondo-stabilized Spin Liquid in Kondo Lattice with Heavy Fermions

Microscopic mechanism of forming the spin liquid of neutral fermions in Kondo lattices with nearly integer valence of the f-electrons in presented. It is shown that the competition between the Kondo scattering and the indirect exchange interaction can result in stabilization of a state with separated spin and charge excitations with a Fermi-type spectrum for both of them. The origin of strong a...

HOW THE KONDO EFFECT CAN EXIST IN Gd INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS

Based on the crystal and magnetic structural properties of some Gd intermetallic compounds, it is shown that with increasing conduction electron concentration, Gd experiences electronic and magnetic instability, and that these behaviors point to the appearance of Kondo Lattice. We suggest that the conduction electrons have gained local character. It is shown that Kondo effect should be observed...

Kondo insulators in the periodic Anderson model: a local moment approach

The symmetric periodic Anderson model is well known to capture the essential physics of Kondo insulator materials. Within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory, we develop a local moment approach to its single-particle dynamics in the paramagnetic phase. The approach is intrinsically nonperturbative, encompasses all energy scales and interaction strengths, and satisfies the low-energy di...

Heavy Fermion Physics

This article is intended to be a very brief review on the most basic facts and concepts of heavy fermion physics. A general overview is given as an introduction. In the following part, the mechanism leading to the formation of heavy fermions is explained briefly, and its connection to Kondo effect is emphasized. Then we talk about heavy fermion theories in more detail, where the concepts like K...
